I seem to be having conflicting culinary points of view this week. So far, I have made an Asian inspired slow roasted salmon and steamed broccoli on Monday night as I felt that Harry and I were in dire need of some quality Omega-3’s. I also made up a pot of lentil stew because not [...]

Lentil Stew

I did not grow up liking lentils or any bean for that matter. I literally forced down green beans and aside from peanuts, never ingested any legumes as far as I know. I have vague memories of pushing away the garbanzo bean salad that the Greek owned diner used to set out as a complimentary [...]
Red Lentil Dal

I made this partially because I didn’t want to go the grocery store again this week and partially because I am always attempting to use what I have in my pantry. You will also notice that it has the requisite orange color that I seen to duplicate whenever I make soups. Check some of my [...]
Banana Coconut Bread

Growing up, my mom made a lot of banana bread and we all loved it. Over the years, along with the conflicting nutritional news/fads/trends, the recipe changed slightly as well. Originally, the recipe used butter. When butter became the nemesis of the American public, margarine replaced it. When fat in general became the newest public enemy, [...]
Thai Green Nut Butter Sauce over Whole Wheat Spaghetti (or Soba noodles if you have them)

I remember when Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively Delicious cookbook came out. I was intrigued by the addition of squashes and beans added (deceptively) to make kids (and adults) think they are eating something decadent when they are really eating something healthy. The thing is, I don’t really believe in adding things deceptively to unsuspecting [...]

I was formally introduced to the robust food and culture of Spain back in 1990. My family had the wonderful pleasure of hosting a Spanish exchange student from my school. Joel Vicente Juan Botella moved into our house after the winter holidays. He came to us at my request because I had found out that [...]

I love the read food memoirs. I love that they combine snippets of a person’s/family’s life interspersed with favorite recipes, memories of cooking, and events coinciding with the meals eaten alone or shared. They are essentially two books in one, part cookbook and part biography/novel. The first food memoir of sorts that I remember becoming [...]
Baked Thai Tofu with Stir Fried Vegetables and Brown Rice

I’ve been wanting to bake tofu since seeing it in the store and being inspired by others’ wonderful blogposts and beautiful photos! I’m kind of new tofu. I shunned it from an early age based on looks at the supermarket salad bar and always skirted around eating it whenever offered. The first time I really remember eating tofu is at my first sushi experience at a tiny (and now defunct) sushi bar (literally) in Ocean Beach, FI. All the cool kids were getting sushi and somehow I tagged along.
Pizza with Pea-Spinach Pesto and Caramelized Onions and Fennel

This is one of the pizzas I have developed after being really disappointed with many other vegan pizzas I have tried. I am not totally against cheese or dairy but I make a concerted effort to limit it in my diet. Having said that, I have never been impressed with faux non-dairy cheese. I made [...]

This past Christmas my sister gave me some subscriptions to some of my favorite cooking magazines. In these lean financial times it is nice to get something in the mail that is not a bill and brings some joy! I have been a consumate consumer of cooking magazines for a really long time. I can [...]
